The WWE Intercontinental Championship is a prestigious professional wrestling title currently defended on the Raw brand and is considered the secondary championship of the promotion. It was famously created through the unification of the WWF North American Heavyweight Championship and a fictional South American Heavyweight Championship won in a tournament in Rio de Janeiro. Throughout its history, the title has been regarded as a stepping stone to the WWE Championship, held by legendary figures such as Pat Patterson, Bret Hart, and Shawn Michaels.
